Climbing the Giralda on a Cathedral Tour

The Giralda is climbed by ramps, not stairs, and the Cathedral's visit starts there. Which Seville Cathedral tours give you the climb, and which guides go up with you.

Updated November 2026

You can climb the Giralda on any Seville Cathedral visit: the Cathedral’s general visit begins at the tower, and you go up by ramps, not stairs, built wide enough for a horse (Cabildo of Seville Cathedral, checked November 2026). Tours differ in what the guide does there. On the Crown Tours tour in the calendar below, Seville: Priority Access Cathedral, Giralda & Alcázar Tour, the guide introduces the tower, you climb, and the guide meets you downstairs to carry on into the Cathedral, from $60 on promotion, usually $77 (checked November 2026).

Powerd by GetYourGuide

The climb is gradual but can be physically demanding for some guests, and the tour is not suitable for wheelchair users or people with mobility impairments.

How the climb works

The Giralda began as the minaret of the mosque that stood where the Cathedral is, and became its bell tower. Inside, the Cathedral’s own description has ascending ramps winding between the central core and the outer walls, wide enough to ride up on horseback; at the top you look out over the rooftops of Seville. On the Cathedral’s general visit the tower comes first, with its own access control, and the time on your ticket is the time you enter.

The tower is under restoration. The Cathedral began the sixth phase of its work on the Giralda, on the Renaissance crown and the supports of the bells, in April 2026, planned for about 22 months, and says visits are not interrupted. For the climb ramp by ramp, with the views from the top, lagiraldatower.com covers the tower in depth.

So nobody needs a separate Giralda ticket on a tour: the tower is part of the Cathedral’s ticket, and every tour above includes it. What changes is whether your guide is with you on the ramps. On most tours you go up on your own and meet the guide below; Special Plans’ night variant has no Giralda at all, for its timing.

The December days

Map of the ways into Seville Cathedral and La Giralda: the Puerta del Lagarto beside the Giralda, where online tickets enter; the Puerta del Príncipe, the ticket office; the Puerta del Perdón on the north side, the online entrance from 4 to 7 December; and the Real Alcázar ticket office in the Patio de Banderas
La Giralda and the Cathedral’s gates: from 4 to 7 December online visitors enter by the Puerta del Perdón and the ticket office moves to the Puerta del Lagarto.

From 4 to 7 December the Cathedral’s visit covers only the Giralda and the Fons Pietatis exhibition, for the International Congress of Brotherhoods and Popular Piety; online access is through the Puerta del Perdón, and on 8 December the visit is suspended (Cathedral notice, read November 2026). So those four days the tower is the main thing you can see; the rest is in hours and the December notice.
