Columbus' Tomb in Seville Cathedral

Is Christopher Columbus buried in Seville Cathedral? What the Cathedral says, the tomb carried by four heralds, his son's tomb, and the tours that stop there.

Updated November 2026

Yes: the Cathedral says the remains of Christopher Columbus rest in Seville Cathedral definitively. His tomb has been in the Cathedral since 1899, a sculptural group designed by Arturo Mélida and conceived as a funeral procession: four heralds, the figures of the four historical kingdoms of Spain, carry the coffin (Cabildo of Seville Cathedral, checked November 2026). You do not need a tour to see it: the Cathedral’s own general visit, 13 EUR online, takes you into the church. A guided tour adds the story, and the tours below stop at the tomb.

The monument of the four heralds

The tomb has been in the Cathedral since 1899. The mausoleum was designed by Arturo Mélida y Alinari in 1891, and the Cathedral describes the group as a funeral procession. The four heralds stand for the four historical kingdoms of Spain; the Cathedral’s own wording is that they hold the tomb “with respect”, and that his remains “rest here definitively after crossing the ocean”.

Columbus is not the only member of his family in the building. The tomb of his son, the scholar Hernando Colón, is in the retrochoir, and Hernando’s books gave rise to the Colombina Library, which is part of the Cathedral’s archives and libraries.

Seeing it with a guide

The tomb is one of the stops guides make inside the Cathedral, and a guide is how you hear why Columbus lies in Seville at all. On the Crown Tours tour in the calendar below, Seville: Priority Access Cathedral, Giralda & Alcázar Tour, you stand before the tomb as part of the Cathedral visit, after the Real Alcázar and the Giralda, from $60 on promotion, usually $77 (checked November 2026).

Powerd by GetYourGuide

The Cathedral-only tours stop there too. The Seville Cathedral & Giralda Tower: Fast-Track Guided Tour (Voyager Seville) names Columbus’ tomb and the main altarpiece among its highlights, 1.5 hours from $38 on promotion, usually $40; the Seville: Small-Group Cathedral and Giralda Tour with Tickets (Seville Unique Experiences) takes a group of at most 10 past the main altar, the choir, the vestry and the tomb in 2 hours, from $42 on promotion, usually $47 (checked November 2026).

In December the tomb is not on the visit

From 4 to 7 December the Cathedral’s visit covers only the Giralda and the Fons Pietatis exhibition, for the International Congress of Brotherhoods and Popular Piety, and on 8 December the visit is suspended (Cathedral notice, read November 2026). The tours of SEVILLA OFFICIAL TOURS spell it out for their guests: in those days the Cathedral part keeps to the eastern third of the church, where the exhibition is, without the Main Chapel or Columbus’ Tomb. If the tomb is why you are going, plan another day.
